What to Have Ready When You Call
- What type of fireplace it is — gas, wood-burning, or an insert? If you are not sure, that is fine; describe it and we will figure it out. (A gas log set looks like ceramic logs in an open masonry firebox; a gas insert is a sealed unit behind glass.)
- What it is doing — pilot won't stay lit? Won't turn on at all? Smoke coming into the room? A smell when you first fire it up? Glass fogging or turning black?
- How long it has been since it was serviced — annual inspections keep small problems small, and the first cold snap is the worst time to discover a skipped one. If it has been more than a year since a chimney inspection, say so.
- When it started — a problem that appears at the first firing of the season is usually different from one that shows up mid-winter under heavy use.
